Exeter Cathedral -
Many of the towns and villages across Devon have some beautiful parish churches, many dating back to Norman times. Of course, not forgetting Exeter Cathedral right in the centre of the city. Set in Cathedral Close, which contains many historic buildings, including the favourite haunt of Sir Francis Drake whenever he was in Exeter. The cathedral itself was built in 1114, although much of the building dates to the mid forteenth century, as do many of the bosses on the immense ceiling. The gothic vaulted ceiling really is large, in fact it is the longest unbroken ceiling of its type in the world.

Also in the city centre are other historic churches, such as St Stephens famed for its bow where the chapel was built on top of an arch to allow the public pavement to run straight underneath. There is also St Pancras in the Guildhall shopping centre, which dates back to Saxon times and is still in use.
